BLACK AND BROWN THEATRE
mission & vision
Black and Brown Theatre is a 501c3 non-profit theatre company that seeks to create opportunities for theatre artists of color in the professional Michigan theatre scene.
Our goal is that within the next 5-10 years, we will no longer be needed because all of the other professional theatres in Michigan will be hiring theatre artists of color in an equitable manner that reflects the reality that the city of Detroit is 84% Black, the cities of Hamtramck and Dearborn are predominately Arab American and the city of Southwest Detroit is predominately Latino/a/x.
We live in a city that is beautifully diverse and we hope to see that reflected on the stages so that everyone has a chance to see themselves in the theatre.
In order to fulfill our mission, we produce full-length plays, showcases of ten minute plays, workshops and readings to give artists of color a platform to be seen and heard. We also connect our artists with professional theatre companies through networking events and performances to build a bridge between the professional theatre scene in Michigan and the artists who reflect the true diversity of our city. Additionally, our outreach programs train and expose the next generation of artists to the power of theatre.
